3 Things Christians Can Learn From BeReal.

Sep 2, 2022 3:00:00 PM
1. Authenticity - I know. Shocker. It’s in the name.

One of my favorite things about BeReal is that there’s no filters or editing in the pictures you take in the app. Things are just as they appear. It’s so so important to be authentic in our faith. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve asked people what they think about christians, only for them to say something to the effect of ‘they’re so fake.’

When I take a look at the Psalms I can see every human emotion displayed before God. David and the other authors of Psalms weren’t afraid to lay it all out in front of God; joy, pain, anger, and sadness are all welcome in the kingdom of Jesus.

In Hebrews 4:16 it says, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

We’re going to have to be honest about our needs if we want to receive this grace Hebrews talks about.

2. Fresh Start Every Day - Every day once a day there’s a notification that goes off saying that you have 2 minutes to capture your BeReal.

The notification could go off at any time during the day so you might not be “ready” for it at the moment it happens. There’s always tomorrow. Obviously you can still choose to be fake about it. It’s still a social media platform. However, the Grace of God is bigger than we think it is.

Again, I’d point you to Hebrews 4:16 and invite you to accept the grace of God.

I’d also add, this is a continual theme of most biblical “heroes” you see; throughout the scriptures you get to see their failures as well as the successes. They didn’t act “heroic” all the time.

And you don’t have to be either. Just keep moving towards God because He’s the one that transforms you.

3. You have to BeReal to see others BeReal. - In app, you can only see what others post when you post yourself.

People tend to feel more safe to share their lives and open up when someone else shares first. Most People see someone going deep and sharing something difficult they’re going through and feel better about asking for support. I know I think that way.

James 5:16 says, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

I’m part of a missions movement called Youth With a Mission (YWAM) and One of our values here is, Do First, Then Teach. The idea behind why we value this is because Jesus never asked anybody to do anything He wasn’t willing to do first, and we want to live like He did.
