What If God Is Already Using You?

Aug 29, 2017 6:30:14 PM

Don't wait for "someday". What if God is already using you?

Missionary, Jim Elliot, said, “wherever you are, be all there!” That seems easy enough, right? However, many of us look ahead to some distant future where God will eventually bring us to our fullest potential. We say things like, “When I have more experience, more confidence, more knowledge, then we can ‘be all there.’” God’s love is an active love. We can’t wait around until we feel that we’ve arrived at that “place” to put our faith into action. I’m thankful that I joined YWAM (Youth With A Mission) and completed a Discipleship Training School (DTS) because I’ve learned that no matter where I am God qualifies me and because of that I can step out in faith with confidence, knowing that God will continue to use me.

God is Already Using You

It’s hard in the moment to see the fruit God is growing in us. Sometimes we’re short-sighted, thinking that we’re not effective, we’re not being used. When we accept thinking like that, we stop being able to see how God is using us. Because he is! Our God is a God who meets us where we are in the moment. He’s a God who looks ahead to prepare us for what is to come. Every time you choose to spend time in prayer, encourage someone, read your Bible, serve others, all of this pushes our personal growth in the Lord and the love of God forward. We have to choose to see our lives with heavenly perspective, how God would see us.

“Just because your progress isn’t obvious doesn’t mean your faith isn’t working.” - Steven Furtick

Taking It To the Next Level

If you are dissatisfied with where you are, take an active step. What do you need to do to change that? Even though I grew up in the church, I was often discontent with where my relationship with the Lord was. I hadn’t experienced “discipleship.” By that I mean, I had never had help learning how to take all the head knowledge I learned in church and bring it down to the heart level. Doing a YWAM DTS was the first time I genuinely started to understand how to apply the truth of the Word in my life. Finally, I could begin to see myself the way God sees me. Doing a DTS was the most proactive thing I could do for my faith, because it put me on a path to know God more deeply and from there be able to share His love with others.

Expertise Comes With Experience

The first time I tried to go out and share my faith, I talked to someone who was much older, much more well-spoken, and more knowledgeable than I was. By the end of the conversation, I had more questions about my faith than he had about his beliefs. It would be easy to take this experience and think I’d never be able to share my faith effectively with anyone, but that would be selling myself short. Most people don’t get it right or do it well the first few times, or even the first dozen times. We have to remember our role:

God’s part is to put forth power; our part is to put forth faith” - Andrew A. Bonar

God is asking for obedience; he doesn’t base the success of our obedience on the results. We can trust that as we keep walking in obedience, we will grow into the work that God has called us to.

You can be light right now for the Lord, trust in Him, and use what he has given you to love all you come into contact with. Desmond Tutu said, "Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world.” We don’t have to wait to be the active people God has called us to be. If we are open to the Lord, this present moment becomes an opportunity for us to trust God and let him use us.

Interested in Jesus, adventure, and growing in your faith?

Do a Discipleship Training School, YWAM’s flagship missionary training course. It's a great gap year option. It's also perfect for anyone looking to step out of the ordinary and grow in your faith.

How does it work?

First, you’ll spend 3 months getting to know God amongst a vibrant Christian community and the inspiring beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Then you’ll embark on a life-changing 2-month overseas missions trip, focused on making God known. A new DTS starts every September, January, April, and June! Submit your info below to learn more.
