The faith journey of Generation Z Christians is both exciting and challenging. As they navigate the complexities of modern culture, the need for strong spiritual foundations and authentic community support has never been more important.

Young people in this generation are less involved in traditional church but more inclined to seek out spiritual growth and act with a more open Biblical worldview. As a hub for young adults seeking a like-minded faith community, YWAM Salem stands at the forefront of this new generation's experience.

We offer tailored discipleship programs designed to equip and empower Gen Z Christians on their journey of spiritual formation. In this blog, we discuss the invaluable role of discipleship programs tailored specifically for Generation Z.

Understanding the Unique Spiritual Needs of Generation Z

In the fast-paced digital age, Generation Z faces a unique set of spiritual challenges and opportunities that Baby Boomers and other previous generations can't always comprehend. Raised amidst a sea of information and constant connectivity, today's youth grapple with questions of identity, purpose, and belonging like never before.

Understanding their distinct spiritual needs is paramount to effectively guiding them on their faith journey.

Gen Z seeks authenticity and relevance in their spiritual experiences. They crave genuine connections and meaningful engagement. They long for spaces where their doubts are acknowledged, their questions are explored, and their voices are heard. Moreover, they yearn for a spiritual mentor who understands their context and can walk alongside them with empathy and understanding.

Recognizing these needs is the first step towards building discipleship programs that resonate with Gen Z Christians. By creating spaces for open dialogue, fostering authentic community, and offering relevant resources, YWAM Salem plays a pivotal role in nurturing the faith of today's youth.

What Gen Z Christians Seek from Church Leaders

Church leaders hold significant influence in the lives of Gen Z Christians. To effectively engage this demographic, leaders must embrace authenticity, transparency, and inclusivity.

Gen Z seeks leaders who are approachable, relatable, and willing to engage in honest conversations about faith and life. They value leaders who prioritize listening, empathy, and understanding over rigid authority. Furthermore, they desire leaders who actively demonstrate a commitment to social justice, environmental stewardship, and inclusivity.

By embodying these traits and values, the leaders at YWAM Salem build trust, foster connections, and effectively make disciples of the next generation of Christians.

What is Discipleship?

Gen Z knows what they want and what goals they want to achieve. But as the most unchurched generation in recent history, they don't always know what questions to ask or paths to go down to reach their end goal.

Discipleship is a concept that encapsulates everything Gen Z is searching for in their faith - it's a way of life that extends the entire span of this trailblazing generation's unique spiritual gifts and perspectives.

Discipleship is the process of intentionally guiding and nurturing individuals in their spiritual growth and journey of faith. It involves teaching, mentoring, and equipping them to become more like Jesus Christ, both in character and in actions. Discipleship encompasses a relational dynamic, where more experienced believers come alongside newer ones to provide support, encouragement, and accountability.

It emphasizes not only the acquisition of knowledge but also the application of biblical principles in everyday life. Ultimately, discipleship aims to empower individuals to live out their faith authentically and to make a positive impact on the world around them.

How Discipleship Takes Gen Z Out of Their Local Church and Into the World

Discipleship for Gen Z extends beyond the walls of their local church, propelling them into the world with a mission-centric mindset.

It encourages them to apply their faith in practical ways in whatever sphere of society students choose to pursue. At its core, it's all about engaging with diverse communities and addressing real-world issues.

Through discipleship, Gen Z is equipped to embody Christ's love and values in every sphere of life, from their interactions with peers to their involvement in social justice initiatives. By empowering them to live out their faith boldly and authentically, discipleship inspires Gen Z to become active agents of positive change in the wider world.

What are Discipleship Programs?

YWAM Salem's flagship program, Discipleship Training School (DTS), is an immersive missions training experience designed to facilitate spiritual growth, leadership development, and practical outreach.

YWAM Salem's DTS spans 5.5 months and equips Gen Z DTS students with the skills, knowledge, and experience to become effective disciples and servant leaders across the nations. While we tailor our experience to young people, anyone over the age of 18 or with a high school diploma can partake in the life-altering DTS course.

Key Features of YWAM Salem's Discipleship Programs

YWAM Salem's discipleship program for Gen Zers offers a comprehensive approach to spiritual formation and mission preparation. With a focus on experiential learning and practical application, these programs are tailored to equip young adults for impactful Christian service.

Our YWAM base consists of dormitory-style living in a gorgeous natural setting just outside of Salem, Oregon. An hour's drive from Portland, it's the perfect place for you to recenter yourself in your faith and take the first step toward your future as a missions leader.

DTS is broken into two distinct phases: the campus phase and the outreach phase.

The Campus Phase: Missions Training for Young Adults

During the campus phase, DTS students receive intensive missions training through teaching sessions, small group discussions, Bible study, and personal mentorship. We also offer training in cross-cultural communication, learning how to engage with people from diverse backgrounds and contexts effectively.

Practical skills such as leadership development, teamwork, and problem-solving are emphasized, equipping participants to navigate the challenges of ministry with confidence and grace. The campus phase fosters a vibrant community atmosphere where participants can build meaningful relationships with peers and mentors.

The highlight of this portion of DTS is our tailored DTS elective courses. Taking up nearly half of the curriculum, our electives give you the chance to learn discipleship as it applies to your specific passions and God-given talents.

Our elective courses include:

The Outreach Phase: Serving Jesus Christ Across the Globe

In the outreach phase, participants embark on a transformative journey of practical service and cross-cultural engagement. This international mission trip allows Gen Z students to share the love of Jesus Christ with communities around the world.

On campus you learn to follow Jesus, during outreach, you learn to live as he did in practice, not just studying scripture. Deepen your relationship with God and with yourself as you serve others in communities who may have never come to know His story otherwise.

Potential outreach destinations include:
