    Our Outreach Strategy

Can I really make a positive difference through a short-term outreach to another nation in just 2.5 months? Yes, and here’s how.

    What is an “outreach”?

An outreach is an activity of meeting needs in a population who might not otherwise have access. By definition an outreach is mobile, going to places with need and offering aid.

    Let's talk about need

    40.6%

Of the world's people groups are unreached with the gospel.

    3 Billion

People today have not heard the gospel

    1.3%

Of the population in Thailand, our outreach focus nation, believes in Jesus.

And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. - Jesus, Luke 10:2

YWAM outreach, a response to global need.

At YWAM, we are committed to train and send teams on effective short-term outreaches through our DTS program. A YWAM outreach is designed to release young people to serve needs in places unreached by the gospel through evangelism, intercession, acts of compassion and other expressions of God’s heart for the world. Our outreaches range in length from 8-10 weeks. We've found this duration to be long enough to connect in a nation, yet short enough to not require a long term commitment.

4 Principles of a YWAM Salem Outreach

    1

    Connect

YWAM outreaches are effective in part because of our vast global connections. There are over 1,000 YWAM ministry hubs in the world, and on your outreach you will likely connect with one or multiple locations. This enables you to hit the ground running, partnering with local efforts already happening.

    Learn

The YWAM outreach experience is all about learning. Yes, you are offering your gifts and skills to be used for Jesus. But an effective missionary first learns how to listen. You’ll learn from long-term missionaries and local experts seeking to bring transformation to their communities. You’ll learn about the culture, a little of the language, and explore the local cuisine! Everyday is a new learning experience! You'll return home with more global perspective.

    Serve

Your outreach schedule is packed full of service opportunities. Although each outreach is slightly different, you could be building houses, painting buildings, deep cleaning, going on prayer walks, teaching english, giving sermons, leading Bible studies and seminars, playing with children, doing skits, leading worship, planning dinners for new friends, and even doing multimedia projects!

    Share

The heartbeat behind everything we do is to share the love of Jesus. The primary focus of a DTS is to find avenues to share the gospel. On outreach, you will learn about and experience various forms of evangelism. Many have the opportunity to preach the gospel to groups and develop friendships to share your testimony one on one.

“We are not bringing Christ to poor communities. He has been active in these communities since the creation of the world, sustaining them, Hebrews 1:3 says, by His powerful Word. Hence, a significant part of working in poor communities involves discovering and appreciating what God has been doing there for a LONG time.

Steve Corbett, When Helping Hurts: How to Alleviate Poverty without Hurting the Poor...and Yourself

"How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”

    Apostle Paul, Romans 10:14-15

“What is the task of the church? We are to embody Jesus Christ by doing what He did and what He continues to do through us: declare—using both words and deeds—that Jesus is the King of kings and Lord of lords who is bringing in a kingdom of righteousness, justice, and peace. And the church needs to do this where Jesus did it, among the blind, the lame, the sick and outcast, and the poor.”

How do you select outreach locations?

YWAM Salem has a team of leaders that oversee our missions and training strategy. They work with the staff team of the upcoming school to determine the number of teams and locations for each of our Discipleship Training Schools. They select locations through two ongoing strategies:

    1. Partner with Locations for Consistent Impact

YWAM Salem desires to develop young people, but also make genuine and lasting impact in nations. To do this, we have to be consistent. Since 2014, we have partnered with 3 different YWAM locations in Thailand and have begun to see the fruit of our impact. We will continue to develop these partnerships, so you can expect Thailand to be one of your DTS outreach locations!

    2. Pray and Respond to New Areas of Need

We believe in seeking and hearing God for specific direction through prayer and waiting. Before each DTS, the leaders pray which locations or which global needs God would have us attend to. Out of these prayer times we’ve sent teams to the Middle East, East Asia, Europe, and Africa and started countless partnerships with new ministries!

When do I get to know my outreach location options for DTS? How do I choose?

Your outreach locations are determined by your staff team just 1-2 weeks before the start date of your DTS. We reveal those locations typically at the end of your first week here. Our schools range from is 10-30 students which form 1-3 outreach teams around the selected locations. You’ll attend an “outreach reveal” meeting with your classmates where you will be presented the location options and have some time to pray about which location and team you will join. It’s awesome practice in listening for God’s direction in your life!
