Congratulations on joining staff! We are looking forward to having you join our community. Below are a few steps you to ensure a smooth arrival to our campus. We recommend you bookmark this page and treat it as a checklist to prepare for your arrival!
Prior to your arrival, we need to collect some necessary health-related information from you! This form will collect your dietary needs, emergency contact info, health insurance information (required), consent for treatment, and immunization records. Although some of these details may be difficult to track down, in the end it will make for a safer experience for you on staff.
Being a missionary often means bringing the gospel to places that lack access to modern technologies and medicine. Our policy at YWAM Salem is to stress the importance of vaccinations in the context of worldwide travel as a missionary. Additionally, Oregon law requires proof of MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) immunization be provided or a non-medical or medical exemption be signed prior to attendance at a college or university. If you have not received your MMR (Measles) vaccination, you may have to forgo your choice of outreach location and be sent to the nation of lowest risk to catching Measles. You may want to complete, or update, the following vaccinations with your local doctor: MMR, Hepatitis A and B, Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Polio. Please note some other vaccines could be required for outreach destinations. You may find it more cost effective to receive these immunizations in your own city or country before you arrive.
On Campus Housing
There is a limited amount of housing on our campus, so if you are interested in this, please contact personnel@ywamsalem.org to check availability. As for the fees for living on campus, you will be charged monthly:
Off Campus
If you are interested in living off campus, there are no fees that will be charged to you by the campus, but there is still a requirement to raise the same amount of minimum support. We ask that you be fully funded before you arrive on staff so that finances won’t keep you from being fully immersed in all the ministry the Lord is calling you to, or be a stressful burden to be shouldered as you are transitioning into our community. We want this transition to be as easy as possible!
People are the best resources! Everyone in our Personnel Department has fundraised for coming on staff. We would like to encourage you and help you in any way we can. So feel free to reach out!”
YWAM was founded in 1960 and quickly grew to be the largest missions movement in the world in part because of our decentralized nature and relationship based fundraising. YWAM has trained millions of missionaries and currently has over 20,000 full time staff operating in over 1,000 different locations in 180 nations. Each one of those missionaries has embarked on the journey of raising their own funds for their training and ministry. Not one YWAMer, even our founder Loren Cunningham, receives a paycheck. Raising our own funds has enabled YWAM to grow exponentially and removed barriers from sharing the gospel. However, fundraising can be difficult! We want to help!
When support raising it is important to communicate with your supporters that if they are sending you a check in the mail, that they do NOT write your name anywhere on it. Please make checks out to “YWAM Salem” and have them include a separate note that says who it is for.
This document covers the why and the how of fundraising so you can open the door to God’s calling on your life.
We can hardly wait to meet you! Please let us know, at least 2 weeks in advance, how and when you plan on arriving. Here are your arrival options:

If you are driving in, submit your specific arrival information below so we can know when to expect you.
Get ready for international travel!
As an international missions organization we do encourage each staff member to have a current passport.

Popular Questions and Answers
You’re in for a treat. Western Oregon is beautiful! Salem, the capital city, is found in the Willamette Valley between the Cascade Mountain Range and the Oregon coast. The YWAM Salem campus is set on 35 acres of partially wooded land and bisected by a quiet stream, and conveniently situated right off the interstate 5 freeway. We are located 15 minutes south of downtown Salem in a rural area of rolling hills, fir trees, and green pastures. Salem is a medium sized city with a safe, smaller town feel. We are only 4 miles from the nearest store and about an hour from Portland and the Oregon Coast!
The temperature stays moderate year round, but with definite seasons. September and October are often warm (from 55-70F), but November through February can be cold (from 20-50F). The springtime months of March through May are sunny and cool (from 55 to upper 60’s F). Summer begins gradually but June through August is pleasantly hot and dry (70-80F, highs reach the 90-100F). Most of the year, rain is a common part of our day; we have frequent rain showers that keep the Pacific Northwest lush and green.
Here’s our recommended packing list:
Yes! We encourage students to bring cars because we are not in walking distance of any major stores. We also want you to explore Oregon on the weekends! We also have long term parking available so your car can be stored safely while on outreach.
Yes! We have a limited amount of hospitality rooms available for $10 a night per person. Those are great for your friends and family to come stay with us! You can book online by visiting YWAM Salem’s website link to “Hospitality”. It is a good idea to book far in advance, as these rooms fill up quickly. There are also plenty of hotels nearby that are a good option as well.
Whew! That's a lot of info. But hopefully it's helpful. As always, don't hesitate to ask questions! Feel free to email us!
